A North American Log Cabin — vibe coding by Fxrc
being the story of the cabin in the woods, and of the man who kept it《无名测绘员的遗稿》—— 林中小屋完整传奇
Where the northern spruce-forest ends, the fog never lifts. Ten thousand spruces, autumn pines and dead trees stand thin near at hand and thicker farther off, until at last they melt into the mist like a dark-green sea without a shore. A pebbled path winds among them, strewn with fallen leaves, coming out of the depths of the fog; at its end lies a yard paved with leaves, and in the yard a log cabin — a pitched roof of shingles, an iron stovepipe thrust up through it, a lamp hung by the porch.
As you arrive, you come down out of the sky from seventy metres above the forest, and skim along the path between the treetops, like a man walking home through the woods. You come round to the front of the cabin, and begin slowly to circle it. The sky changes and the clouds go by: it may be fair, or rain may be coming on, or snow beginning to fly. Six minutes make a whole day. The sun climbs out of the east, the shadows shorten and lengthen again; night falls, the moon and stars come out, and every lamp in the house is lit. Snow settles on the roof, deeper and deeper, until one day the whole of it slides down and strikes the ground. When the rain has stopped, the eaves are still dripping.
The cabin is alive. Time goes on and on. But its master is gone.
The master of the cabin left no name. The old trappers of the hills called him the Surveyor.
Thirty years ago he was a man of the Imperial Survey Office, sent out with an official blank map, a shotgun, an axe, a folding table and a whole chest of instruments, walking that pebbled path into the spruce-forest. His charge was simple: settle the bounds of these northern hills, mark the contour lines, finish the map, and go. He meant to stay a single summer.
But deep in the forest he found a place that was on no map — where beneath the roots of an old tree the earth had split open, and gave off a breath that set the compass spinning and scorched the pine needles black. On his map he marked it with a ✕, and wrote beside it: Do Not Enter. Back at the cabin he wrote a report, set down the bearings, and sent it off. Nothing came of it. Perhaps the postman never called for it; perhaps the ground froze too early. He kept a bundle of letters, and in the end they all went into the stove.
He stayed. Not because he was trapped, but because he believed himself the only man who knew the rift was there. If he went away too, there would be no one left to watch it.
So it was for thirty years. Thirty-one great snows fell and melted away. By slow degrees he passed from the man who measured the forest to a man who belonged to it.
Push open the great door, and this is the first room. On the left, a wall hung with every tool for going out; on the right, a bench for changing boots; a lamp overhead, and behind the curtain at the back, the water closet. This was the border where man and forest held their parley: take off the boots, and the wildness stays outside; pull them on, and be a hunter once again.
Behind the curtain: the only room in the cabin with a door of its own.
The whole north wall is given to the cast-iron stove and the woodpile; across from them stand the dry sink and racks hung with pots and plates. It is the weightiest room in the house — every breath of living warmth sets out from here.
A corner against the east wall: a narrow board, nailed to the wall, that folds up and down, and two wooden stools.
The middle of the cabin. The long settee faces the stove, the low table stands upon the rug, the bookcase and cupboard keep to the walls, and the writing desk has been moved to the window. Here is where the Surveyor truly lived.
Up the wooden ladder, under the roof: the place for sleeping, with a bed, a night table, a low wardrobe and a rocking chair. The warm air gathers up here; it is the warmest place in the house.
Every thing in the cabin has its own story. Step inside and lay a hand on it.
Gather up all the threads, and look —
His way out of the door never varied: gloves and cap from the shelf; the greatcoat from the coat rail; boots on at the bench; the lantern; the axe from the wall; and out. For thirty-one years, every time, just so.
But the last time, he took nothing. The greatcoat hangs on its peg, still creased; the boots stand by the tray, their tops agape; gloves and cap lie on the shelf untouched; the lantern has not been moved; the three matches have not been moved; the axe hangs on the wall.
He did two things only. He opened the stove door halfway, so the fire would burn the longer. And he left the great door open, with the porch lamp lit.
Then, in his house slippers, he walked down the pebbled path into the fog.
The note beneath the woodpile was written long before: If I am gone, there is wood here to last till spring. The unfinished map in the desk drawer gives its last bearing to the ✕. The bed in the loft is folded square, the ladder slid back to its place, the bar let down — no need to climb up again. The rocking chair stood empty in the night, still gently rocking; the watch stopped at seventeen minutes past three.
He did not leave in haste. He went by design. The note under the woodpile, the embers in the stove, the open door and the porch lamp — these were his last words to the house. As a man tidies his home, shuts the windows, leaves a lamp burning, and sets out on a long journey.
Only, this time, the journey lay towards the place on the map marked Do Not Enter.
Thirty years ago he came into this forest to draw lines across a blank map. Then he found a rift that could not be drawn on any map, and so he stopped, and kept watch over it the rest of his life. Thirty-one great snows; the axe-haft full of notches; his footprints grown into the shape of tree-roots. Slowly he passed from the man who measured the forest to a man who belonged to it.
On the last night he sat in the rocking chair in the loft and watched the stars wheel past the dormer all night long. Then he came down from the loft and, without his coat, without changing his boots, without the lantern, walked down the pebbled path into the fog.
He took nothing with him, for he thought he would not need to come back. Or else he thought that, for such a place, anything one carried would be too much.
The cabin lives on still. When dark comes the lamps are lit, and the stove does not go out. Rain drips from the eaves; snow gathers on the roof and slides away. Spring thaws the ice; autumn brings down the leaves. The boot-prints on the mat have worn into the weave, and the hollow in the settee will never spring back.
It is as if he had only gone out to split a little wood, and in a moment would shake the snow from his shoulders, stamp in over the mat, scrape the mud off at the bench, hang his greatcoat on the rail, put another log on the stove, and settle into the hollow on the settee that belongs to him alone.
But he will not come back.
He has become, out there in the fog, a part of the spruce-forest.
The porch lamp is still burning, lighting a way home.
Not his. Yours.
— If you were to walk down that pebbled path into the fog, and on to the end of the fog, you would find the path has no end at all. It only fades away, quietly, beside the roots of a certain spruce. The earth beneath the roots is gently heaved, as though something were growing underneath.
You stand there a while, and something feels wrong: the compass is turning, and the pine needles are scorching.
Then you turn round, and walk back along the path.
Far off, the porch lamp is still lit. The fire still burns. The cabin is still waiting.
It is not waiting for anyone. It is only waiting for a long enough winter to pass.
